More Important Brake Tips
Heed these tips and you'll be
well on your way to assuring that your MERCEDES
brakes won't fail in an emergency:
MERCEDES Brake Repair Tip:
Keep the hydraulic reservoir filled to the proper
level, and use the type of fluid recommended
by MERCEDES BENZ. Never substitute or mix fluid
types. Remember that hydraulic brake fluid absorbs
water, so never use old hydraulic fluid—always
use a fresh container.
MERCEDES Brake Repair Tip:
Keep your brakes clean by washing them off at
the same time you wash the rest of the car.
This will keep squeaky dust and dirt off the
pads and will make the brakes easier to inspect,
adjust and repair.
MERCEDES Brake Repair Tip:
Never let any oil or other lubricant contact
brake friction surfaces. If this does happen—via
spray, drip, touch or other means—immediately
spray the surfaces with brake cleaner to remove
contamination completely.
MERCEDES Brake Repair Tip:
There are no shortcuts or quick fixes for correcting
brake problems. Brakes either work properly
or they don't. Know your MERCEDES braking system—how
it should work, feel and sound—so you'll
know when something has gone wrong.
MERCEDES Brake Repair Tip:
Most imported cars do not have serviceable rotors—they
must be replaced when you replace the pads.
These rotors can’t be "turned"
to correct imperfections because there isn't
sufficient metal thickness to accomplish this
safely.
MERCEDES Brake Repair Tip:
Keep a repair log, with receipts, whenever you
have your MERCEDES serviced. This will come
in handy if you need to check to see if your
warranty is still in effect. More important,
it's a great gauge of performance and an indicator
of other possible problems.
MERCEDES Brake Repair Tip:
Any time you replace your MERCEDES BENZ brake
pads, be sure to bleed the hydraulic system
to remove any air bubbles. Most MERCEDES technicians
recommend changing the fluid with every pad
replacement. If you are not sure of the proper
technique for bleeding the MERCEDES hydraulic
system, don't try to do the job yourself. Seek
help from a MERCEDES expert technician. Cars
equipped with ABS should be bled only by professionals.
MERCEDES Brake Repair Tip:
Your pads cause most brake noises. And when
you replace the pads, you should also replace
the sensors and seriously consider replacing
the rotors as well.
MERCEDES Brake Repair Tip:
After you install new pads, you will need to
"set" them properly. Setting the pads
conditions them for maximum performance and
prevents premature failure. Instructions for
setting pads are usually provided in the package
with the new pads.
